David Higgins, Jr.

David Higgins, Jr., was born December 30, 1948, in Eastover, South Carolina the son of the late David and Bertha Hugee Higgins. Sadly, David departed this life on Friday, June 19, 2026, at PRISMA Health Richland Hospital. He was blessed with seventy-seven (77) years of life.

David was reared in Eastover, South Carolina. He was baptized at Red Hill Baptist Church where he remained a member during his childhood.

Educated in the Public Schools of Lower Richland County, David graduated from Webber High School in the Class of 1970. During his tenure at Webber, he became a trainer for the football and basketball teams where he assisted with injured players and helped to maintain a healthy environment for all players. In his later years in school he also participated in and won many talents shows. He was a great dancer who portrayed the late James Brown who was famous for his splits and awesome dance moves.

David was affectionately known as “Jungle Jock,” because he developed a love for music and became a DJ. He also loved baseball and was an excellent player. His love for the game grew increasingly and he became an official umpire of the game.

On his journey of life, he was employed at Hopkins Elementary School in environmental services for forty-one years. Because of his work ethics and dedication, he became Supervisor, where he was an example to those who were under his tutelage.

Though he is no longer physically with us, he has left a legacy of love to all those who loved and knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Lewis, Willie B., Kalvin O. and Julius Higgins; son, Brandon Burden; and granddaughter, Raeneshia Nixon.

Those left to cherish precious memoirs of Davd are his loving wife, Dorothy Mae Higgins; sons, Jeffrey (Erika) Wider of Columbia, SC, David Higgins of the home, and Terry Johnson of Columbia, SC; daughters, Avis (Donald) Brice of Columbia, SC, Tonja Higgins of the home, Catrina Lakin Kitt, Coronda (Calvin) Richardson, Satora Higgins, and Ashley Richlardson, all of Columbia, SC; bonus daughter, Tekela (Luther) McKinley; his caring siblings, Shirley Higgins of Gadsden, SC, Bernard Higgins and Michael Higgins, both of Columbia, SC; caring half-brothers, Robert Higgins of Columbia, SC; and Bobby Higgins of Eastover, SC; caring half-sister, Delilah Papadakis of Arizona; thirty-two (32) grandchildren; ten (10) great-grandchildren; four (4) bonus grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other loving relatives, and caring friends, all of whom will dearly miss him, along with Roscoe Ramboo Higgins, “the stuffed animal who became a comforting companion during his tough and challenging days, bringing peace and reassurance.”
