Councilman Boyd Jefferson Jones

June 22, 1944 ~ April 30, 2022 (age 77)

Boyd Jefferson Jones was born, June 22, 1944, in West Columbia, South Carolina, the beloved son of the late Theodore Sr. and Emma Tillman Jones. He departed this earthly life to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 30, 2022, in Richland County, South Carolina.

“Grant” as he was affectionately called, was educated in the public schools of Lexington County and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1962.  After graduating from Lakeview, he entered the United States Air Force.  During his tenure in the Air Force, he served as a member of the USAF Football Team.  An athlete at heart, he also ran track and field with AAU.  Upon the completion of his military career, he was employed with Reliable Detective Agency and later at Triple A Bail Bonding Company where he was a bondsperson for many years.

Because he loved his community, in 2005, Boyd ran for and was elected as Councilman for the West Columbia City Council.   During that time, he also served as Mayor Pro Tem of West Columbia.  Councilman Jones also represented the State of South Carolina with the National League of Cities Economic Development Advisory Committee Board of Directors until 2012. Councilman Jones was later appointed by Governor Dick Riley to the Midlands Human Resource Development Commission Board of Directors for Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, and Kershaw Counties. He was a member of the following organizations and boards: Lexington County Municipal Association, where he served as Vice President, Municipal Association of South Carolina, Caucus of Black Municipal Elected Officials, National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials representing Congressional District 2, and the National League of Cities Small Cities Council. His last term ended in 2018. “Well Done Community Servant, Well Done!"

Those who will forever cherish Boyd’s fond and precious memories are his sons, Jeffery Jones of Latta, SC; and Patrick Lewis of Atlanta, GA; his daughter, Chelsey Jones of Columbia, SC; brother, Rev. Charles (Mary) Jones of West Columbia; and his sister, Claretta J. (Henry) Sulton of Columbia, SC; a host of nephews, nieces, and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom join the family in morning their loss of Boyd, but rejoice that he is now with the Lord.
