Corthen Manning, Jr. Obituary

Corthen Manning Jr. was born on May 17, 1934 in Blythewood, South Carolina. He was the third of eleven children born to the late Corthen Sr. and Susie Mae Durham Manning. He departed this life on April 15, 2021.

Corthen was educated in Blythewood, S.C. but never completed his education. After the death of his father in 1952, as the eldest son, he withdrew from school to help support his six younger siblings and mother as well as work in the fields preparing crops.

Corthen worked many jobs early in life to support his family.  He finally settled on a career in welding where he worked at Owen Steel and later Kline Iron and Steel where he retired.

Corthen joined Pine Grove Church at an early age where his love for the Lord begin to grow. He remained a faithful member of Pine Grove until his death. He served in many capacities in the church to include the President of the Jubilee Choir, Male Chorus, Pathway Prayer Band, Trustee Board and finally as head Deacon.  As he transitioned to other side, his final words were, “I am going home to see Jesus.”

In his spare time, Corthen enjoyed sitting on his front porch reminiscing about old times with family and friends. He also had a love for all things sports.  He was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and passed that love onto various family members who will be left to carry on the tradition.

He was preceded in death by his children, Corthen Manning Jr. III, Ronnie Manning and Brian Manning; siblings, James Manning, David Harris, Mary Miller Hightower, John Manning, Bertha Ann Manning, Frank Bolar, Allie Mae Manning and Frank Manning.

Corthen leaves to mourn his loving wife of over 65 years, Mary Virginia Manning of Columbia, South Carolina; one son, Kevin Eugene Manning of Columbia, South Carolina; three daughters, Kathy Elaine Drayton and Virginia Darlene Green both of Columbia, South Carolina, Tresha (Lloyd) Sterling of Chester, Virginia; five grandchildren, LaToya (Darrell) Guider and Tyeisha Manning both of Columbia, South Carolina, Courtney (Crystal)  Drayton of Augusta, Georgia, Sienna and Cameron Sterling both of Chester, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Ziyonna Guider and Ijia Guider of Columbia, South Carolina, and Keishaun Drayton of Augusta, Georgia; two brothers Theodore (Betty) Manning and Henry (Earline) Manning both of Columbia; two sisters, Essie Manning Freeman of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Zelma Manning Showell of Raleigh, North Carolina; and a host of other loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
