Mr. Charlie James Dawson (74), affectionately known as “CJ” by his family and friends, was born May 3, 1948, to the late Willie James and Christine Moore Dawson. He departed this earthly life on Sunday, August 14, 2022, in Columbia, South Carolina.
In his early years he attended the State School for the Deaf and Blind (currently Governor Morehead School, in Raleigh, North Carolina). Charlie learned to play the piano while attending school and was a great musician. He once did performances with a band called “Willie Mo Band” whe1'e he often ‘took-the- stage’ with his music. He enjoyed playing gospel music and had a lovely singing voice. After graduating, he began his journey through life in Greensboro, North Carolina, Ohio, and finally to South Carolina, where lie joined the Greater Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Charles E. Graham, Pastor. Charlie loved Greater Faith. During his tenure he served as musician faithfully for over twenty years until his health declined.
Mr. Dawson was employed at the Industry of the Blind for several years before moving on to work at the SC State House where he became a state employee until retiring in 2015.
Mr. Dawson was set in his ways, but he was a man of his word. If he said that he would do something, he would do it; however, he could be a bit stubborn at times, especially if he didn't agree with or understand something. Charlie loved bowling, his all-time favorite sport, and watching westerns and sports on TV. He was a very loving brother and great friend and will be sorely missed by his family and all that knew him.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Dawson was preceded in death by two sisters, Alberta Dawson, and Sudie M. Dawson-James.
Mr. Dawson is survived by three siblings; one brother, Willie L. Dawson of Raleigh, NC; and two sisters, Effie B. Mays of Indianapolis, IN; and Ernestine Carter (Lawrence) of Boston, MA; three children whom he loved dearly, one son, Avis Jerome Wells of Greensboro, NC; two daughters, LaChanna Potts and Lindsey Potts both of Columbia SC; a longtime close friend, Sherlene Potts of Columbia, SC; two granddaughters, Gianna and GiCelle Chandler of Columbia, SC; a host of nieces and a nephew that he adored dearly.
