Charles Edward Blakely departed his earthly life on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Prisma Health Richland Heart Hospital, in Columbia, South Carolina. A native of Cayce/Lexington County, he was born on December 3, 1950, the youngest child of the late Benjamin Lewellyn Blakely and Edella Brown Blakely. Charles was the devoted husband of Judy Blakely.
Charles was a “cradle” Episcopalian. He was formerly a member of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Cayce, South Carolina and upon the closing of the church, his family became devoted members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Columbia, South Carolina. He formerly served on the Vestry and was proud to be the Junior Warden. He was also a member of the Men’s Club and was known for making his delicious hush puppies at the fish fry fund raisers.
Charles was an avid fisherman and enjoyed sharing his catch with others. Charles loved spending time with friends and family at various parties and celebrations. He was also a pillar in his community as he affectionately looked out for his neighbors, and friends. Charles was an excellent cook and enjoyed making delicious meals for his family. Charles enjoyed watching television, and movies in his spare time. Although he had a quiet demeanor, Charles had quite the sense of humor and enjoyed having long conversations while telling jokes and stories to his loved ones.
Charles was a retired Mental Health Specialist who was employed with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health for more than thirty years. He was a graduate of C. A. Johnson High School.
Charles will be affectionately missed and forever cherished by his loving wife, Judy Blakely; his beloved daughter, Charlisa Alia Blakely of Columbia, South Carolina; his charming stepdaughter, Shauntee Holmes, of Decatur, Georgia; grandson, Breemond Holmes of Fairbanks, Alaska; granddaughter, Deja Holmes of Decatur, Georgia; loving sisters, Betty B. C. Montgomery of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jane B. Spann, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and Tannie B. Smith, of Columbia, South Carolina; caring brother, John Elliot Blakely; sister-in-law, Zephia Wood Blakely, both of Columbus, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, other relatives and dear friends, all of whom will cherish his memory and will miss him dearly.
