Broadus Payne, 98, was born April 10, 1924, in Ninety, Six, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Henry and Leila Gilliam Payne. On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, God whispered in his ear and wrapped His arms around him to come home.
Broadus attended Edgefield County public schools and later learned masonry as a trade.
At the age of 24, he moved to Columbia, SC where he began working as a construction worker. Broadus was instrumental in the building of many parts of, and buildings in the Columbia and the surrounding area including Benedict College, Voorhees College, Denmark College, Spring Valley Country Club and many of the interstates throughout South Carolina. He was married to the love of his life and best friend, the late Charlotte Weathers Payne. Their union of love was blessed with 50 years of love and devotion to each other.
Broadus enjoyed building things with his hands, fishing, working in the yard, reading his Bible, and sitting on the porch. Family and neighbors always enjoyed visiting and sitting on the porch with him as he shared his memories, laughter and talks about God and life.
At an early age, Mr. Payne joined Pleasant Lane Baptist Church in Edgefield, SC. He later moved his membership to First Nazareth Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Blakely N. Scott. During his tenure at First Nazareth Baptist Church, he enjoyed traveling and singing with the Brotherhood Ministry until he retired.
Mr. Payne was also preceded in death by his son, Jim Samuels; sisters Emma Price, Louise Martin, Mayree Frazier, Carrie Durant, Roselle Mae Frazier; brothers, Johnny Payne, Willie Payne, Vanderbilt Payne, Robert Lee Payne and George Payne.
Broadus leaves to cherish his fond and precious memories his loving daughters, Rosa Mae Walker of Columbia, SC; and Crystal Weathers of Orangeburg, SC; a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great-nephews and niece; and great- and nephews and nieces and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.
