A Time to be Born:
Bessie Lee Johnson, the daughter of the late John Johnson, Sr., and
Otha Lee (Nannie) Moreland-Johnson was born December 26, 1925.
A Time to Plant:
Bessie attended school in Meriwether County, Georgia. She joined the Cane Creek Baptist Church in Woodbury, GA at an early age. She moved to Columbus, GA to work under the leadership of her Aunt. Sis. Johnson later relocated to Columbia, SC and was employed at Fort Jackson with the AFEES Corporation from which she retired. She then became a Senior Companion and enjoyed sitting and sharing stories with her clients.
Sis. Johnson joined the St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Roscoe Wilson, Sr. During her tenure at St. John, Bessie was very active in the Senior Choir, the Sallie Boular Circle, and the Kimpson, Lewis, & Price Family Ministry Group until her health declined. She continued to be a faithful member under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Jamey Graham, Sr. until she went home to be with the Lord.
A Time To Die:
Bessie Lee Johnson quietly departed her earthly life on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the Prisma Richland Hospital. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William Thomas Johnson, and her brothers, James Johnson, John Johnson, Jr., and George “Bob” Johnson.
A Time to Mourn:
Bessie leaves to cherish her memories: her granddaughter, Crystal Johnson Royal; a devoted cousin, Scott (Juanita) Carter; Goddaughters, Gloria Weston, Vera Stone, Marvette, and Lavern Meggett; God-granddaughters, Angie and Tanya McMillian; nieces, Mattie Johnson, Rosa Lee (Earnest) Jarrett, Dorothy Deloach, Wyvonia Johnson, Betty Faye Johnson, Diane Webb, and Audra LaShay (Billy) Jones; nephews, Derick Johnson, Joe Hamler, Stanley Johnson, Alvin (Judy) Johnson, Sylvester (Ann) Johnson, and Gregory Johnson; a very close friend and neighbor, Ms. Lavern Harris and Ms. Jackie Allen, a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins, friends, and her extended family consisting of her church family, community family and all who showered her with love to ensure that she was well taken care of.
