Ben Edward Peeples was born on July 3, 1953, into a loving family of faith, love, service, compassion, and benevolence to Deacon James and Elise Peeples in Barnwell, SC. On February 19, 2020, he was received by his Heavenly Father, from labor to reward.
Ben devoted his life to Jesus Christ at an early age. He was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, in Snelling, SC. He attended and matriculated through Barnwell County Schools and graduated from Voorhees College in 1975; receiving a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. As life would have it, he had numerous trades and worked as a plumber.
Ben was a student of the bible. He was devoted and obedient when it came to the principles and teaching of God’s word. He eagerly shared the good news of Jesus Christ to all that crossed his path. He had a message from God to share with people whether it was a parable of the bible or a scripture that could be comforting or an affirmation. He was devoted to God and made it known that being in the presence of God was very important to him on his spiritual journey as he grew in Christ daily.
As the only brother to four sisters, he cherished each of them and supported them with each adventure that came their way. Throughout adulthood, he took care of them and they loved and cared for him. He was blessed to be raised in a community of his family members. He was loved by his cousins and they were raised like siblings. He clung close to his parents to make sure that they were treasured and taken care of in any situation…Bubba loved ‘Mommie and Daddy.’
Ben was affectionately known as the ‘Godfather’ by some of his childhood friends. He was also known as ‘Deacon Jones’ - defensive end when he wore #62 for the Barnwell High School Warhorses. He dabbled in theater where he was casted in Porgy and Bess and won an award in a competition in Charleston, SC. As a musical enthusiast, he played the trombone and enjoyed soul music. He enjoyed landscaping and found joy in keeping his yard well groomed. He had a generous and welcoming spirit and never met a stranger.
In October of 1983, Ben welcomed his only son, J’Michael whom he loved dearly and was in awe of his musical talents. His grandson, Josiah captured his heart and he called him, ‘JoJo.’
He was preceded in death by his father James E. Peeples, mother Elise Peeples, sisters Hattie Lee Peeples and Sylvia Harris.
Those that will live and cherish his legacy, son J’Michael Peeples, grandson Joisah Peeples, two sisters; Kathy (Leon) Adams, Ogretta Peeples both of Columbia, SC and Annie Melrose (Melvin) Counts of Barnwell, SC – reared in the home; three nephews; Broderick Adams of Atlanta, GA, Lloyd Adams of Columbia SC, Silkee (April) McClary of Columbia, SC; one niece Keisha Adams of Columbia, SC, one aunt Bernice Johnson of Plainfield, NJ and a host of loving relatives and friends that will remember his life and service.
