Barney James Parks Obituary

Mr. Barney James Parks, a devoted husband, beloved father, and respected member of the Eastover community, entered eternal rest on May 31, 2025, at Prisma Health Richland in Columbia, South Carolina. Born on February 1, 1940, in Greenville, South Carolina, he was the cherished son of the late Barney Lee Parks and Alma Evans Parks.

Educated in the Georgia public school system, Mr. Parks later attended Bible college, where he deepened his understanding of scripture and his commitment to the Word of God. He went on to serve more than 16 years at the University of South Carolina as a Maintenance Supervisor. Known for his reliability, quiet leadership, and unmatched work ethic, he took great pride in his responsibilities, ensuring a safe and functional environment for students, faculty, and staff alike. His presence on campus was one of dignity, dependability, and quiet service.

On March 15, 2002, he was united in holy matrimony to Mrs. Dorothy Davis Parks in Eastover, South Carolina. Their bond was a testament to enduring love, faith, and partnership. He loved his “Sweetheart” Dorothy dearly, always cherishing the joy and strength she brought into his life. Together, they built a beautiful blended family. Mr. Parks was a proud father and guiding figure to: Barnita Lucas (Don), Regina Williams, Gary Bowens (Joyce), Troy Jeffries (Desiree), Tyrone Bowens, Antiona Bookert, Anthony Bookert (Denna), Darius Wilson (Akilah), and Ronald Morris. His love extended to 21 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he cherished deeply.

Mr. Parks was a faithful member of St. Phillip African Methodist Episcopal Church in Eastover, South Carolina. He served actively in the Sons of Allen and the J.A. Darby Male Chorus. He was a passionate quartet singer whose rich voice uplifted and inspired many. Singing for the Lord was not just his gift—it was his ministry. One of his favorite songs to sing was “Door of Progress” by The Canton Spirituals, a reflection of his journey and faith. His favorite scripture, Hebrews 1, captured the reverence he held for God's Word.

Those who knew him would describe him as a kind-hearted man who stayed in his own lane—a peaceful, steady presence, a loving husband and father, and a man who deeply valued family. He found joy in simple pleasures: watching football and basketball, enjoying Western films, and snacking on popcorn. His laughter, calm presence, and deep love for those around him left an unforgettable impression.

Mr. Parks is also remembered by his dear sisters-in-law, Thelma Dwight (Rev. William) and Loretta Gunter, both of Eastover, SC, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Though his earthly journey has ended, Mr. Barney James Parks leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, love, music, and unwavering strength. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
