Alvin McKinley Byrd was born on October 15, 1960, in Statesboro, Georgia, the son of Leo McKinley and Annie-Mae Byrd. He peacefully departed this life on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at home, comfortably in his own space with his beloved wife by his side.
Alvin received his early education in the local school system and attended Snyder High School. He later continued his education at Florida A&M University and Jersey State. Alvin proudly served his country in the United States Navy for three years, an experience that shaped his strong work ethic and dedication.
In 1990, Alvin moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where he built a life centered around family, faith, and hard work. On February 14, 1992, he married the love of his life, Latrelle. Their union was one filled with love, commitment, and shared memories. With this union he gained a mother-in-law, Elouise Reaves.
Alvin had a true gift with his hands and a passion for carpentry. He turned that passion into purpose by starting his own business, ByrdMans Carpentry, LLC, where he became well known for remodeling homes and bringing new life to spaces. Many people remember Alvin not only for his craftsmanship, but for his reliability, determination, and pride in his work.
Alvin was known for his vibrant personality and joyful spirit. He was often the life of the party, and his laughter was so contagious and memorable that it was impossible to forget. His presence could light up any room. One of his favorite hobbies was spending time working on his beloved white Mustang, something he took great pride in and truly enjoyed.
Alvin’s greatest joy in life was his family. He leaves behind a loving legacy to his wife, Latrelle Byrd; children, Rayshawn Scurry, Davon Reaves, Avia Reaves, Ashley Reaves; and daughter-in-law, Monica Reaves. He was also a proud and loving grandfather to Justice, Davon Jr., Kemari, Dayshawn, Trayvon, Rochon III, Tyreke, Skylar, Kendall, Richard, and Ashton; loving and caring siblings, James (Elaine) Byrd, Larry Byrd, Deborah Byrd-McQuilla, Nadine (Isaiah) Jones, Paul Byrd, Victor Byrd, Paula Byrd, and Suzette Byrd; and five sisters-in-law in Columbia; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones.
Alvin will be remembered for his contagious laughter, his warm smile, his dedication to his family, his love for house music, and the way he always stayed busy doing what he loved. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created and the love he shared will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
