Ada Mae Charley was born January 14, 1941, in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Alvin “Doc” Moten and Annie Mae Mender. She departed this life on Wednesday May 7, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion. Mrs. Ada Mae better known as “Wussy” the neighborhood Mama, “The Candy Lady” and Housekeeper.
She was also a faithful member of Gunter’s Chapel Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, where she found strength and community for many years.
She devoted her life working, being a loving mom and taking care of her family. Ada was known for her passion for cooking for her family with any empty belly. It could be during the holidays, Sundays, or just any day, you could guarantee that if you showed up, she was going to make you a plate, and send you home with plenty of food to go. During the holidays, she would love to bake homemade pies and prepare meals for loved ones. She also enjoyed planting flowers and vegetables; and she loved everyone in her family, including her dogs, Ginger and Bo very dearly.
Ada Mae was preceded by her husband Henry Charley; son Ervin Sr.; brother Alvin Moten Jr.; sister Doris Moten, and Evelyn Moten.
Her loving memories will be cherished by her children, Son Alphonso (Vickie) Moten, Henrietta Holland (James), Roberta Mccant (Thomas), James Charley (Dolores), Joseph Morant, Larry Moten (Tamaka), and Alonzia Moten. Her one sister, Barbara Taylor; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
