Nathaniel Earl Whaley was born on January 3rd 1954 in Florence, SC. He was the beloved son of the late Silas and Mamie Whaley.
Nathaniel was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y and later moved to Columbia, SC. He took flight from his earthly home on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 4:00 a.m. at the Dorn Veteran's Medical Center/Warriors Walk. He was the 5th child of six siblings, his oldest sister JoAnn and youngest brother Samuel preceded him in death.
Nathaniel was affectionally called “Earl" and "Earl the Pearl" (a name given to him by his friends, for playing great basketball). In the earlier days, Earl enjoyed cooking breakfast for his family, his specialties were Omelets, French Toast, Banana Pancakes and Soda Floats (just to name a few). At times Earl would retreat to his own little world and isolate himself. During that time, he would have very little to say, Earl never argued or raised his voice to his family and his family learned to respect Earl's privacy and changing moods.
Earl attended Harron High School in New York, N.Y and Queens Community College in Queens, N.Y. Earl was an intelligent young man who excelled well in school with excellent grades, mathematics and reading was his passion. Earl once received an “A" on a book report that he never read. He invented a fiction essay with its' characters, title and author. After graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1975-1979. He was very proud to be in the Military and took pride in wearing his uniform and serving his country. While serving in the Military, he became a professional electrician. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Earl met and fell in love with Linda Godfrey and in 1979 their son Nathaniel Mark Whaley (Markie) was born.
