Mother Mary Hook was born in Calhoun County on April 19, 1930 to the late Maggie Briggman and the late John Briggman. She was called home on February 14, 2019.
Mother Mary grew up in Calhoun County and attended Calhoun County public schools. At an early age she joined First Mount Beulah Baptist Church where she gave her life to God. She loved to sing, her favorite song was “Ain’t That a Blessing.” Mother Mary was the mother of her church for many years, it was one of her proudest moments as a member of Beulah. Mother Mary served her church faithfully for more than 80 years, until her health failed. She loved God and her family and friends. She held a very special place in her heart for her grandchildren. Whenever she saw them or heard their voice, it would put a big smile on her face.
Mother Mary had a love for gardening and could grow anything, especially her big yellow daisies. She loved to sew and make beautiful quilts and dress and all types of clothing for her girls. She was a homemaker until all of her children were school age. She then engaged in domestic work at Howard Johnson’s for years. She also was a deli cook at Piggly Wiggly on Devine Street in Columbia, SC.
Mother Mary was married at the tender age of 19 to the late William Hook Jr. “Bubba.” She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillie Pearl Leonard and Alberta Williams; her brother, Charlie William; and son, Calvin Hook.
