Joyce Samuels

Joyce Lynne Samuels was born on March 3, 1956 in Barnwell County to the late Willie Samuels and Estelle Sanders Samuels. She departed this life on July 5, 2018 at the Palmetto Health Richland (Heart) Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina.

Joyce was educated in the Richland County public schools. She’s a 1974 graduate of A.C. Flora High School. Joyce enjoyed working with children and the elderly. She worked several years in childcare at the Columbia campus of the University of South Carolina. She later returned to school and became a certified nursing assistant and began her nursing career at C.M. Tucker Center in Columbia, South Carolina.

Joyce had a fond love for her two cats, Tiny and Lucky. She was a warm-hearted individual who never met a stranger. Although she has endured several health challenges throughout her life, she always maintained a strong faith in God. In March 1999, she joined Great Grace Gospel Center, Inc., in Columbia, South Carolina where she served faithfully on the usher board and other areas of the ministry. God then led her to Central Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina where she was a faithful member of the church and usher board until her health began to decline. 

Though physically Joyce is no longer with us, her loving and kind spirit will forever live in the hearts and lives of all those who loved and knew her.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, the late Alonzo “Zo” Samuels.

Those left to cherish the fond and precious memories of Joyce are her loving and devoted fiancé James Washington of the home; three sisters, Stella E. Portee of Columbia, South Carolina, Ada S.(Donald) Akins of Bamberg, South Carolina, and Janice S. Williams (Larry) of Jacksonville, Florida; three brothers, Willie L. Samuels, Clarence Samuels, and Michael J. Samuels all of Columbia, South Carolina; a loving aunt, Sarah Wallace of Barnwell, South Carolina; a host of nephews, nieces, and other loving relatives and dear friends, all of whom join with the family in sharing the grief caused by her departure.
