Halbert Swift

Halbert Swift was vibrant, outgoing, and to know him was to love him.  When you saw him coming, you knew you would soon have a smile on your face. He didn’t meet any strangers. If he was in the place you would know it by his attire or his affectionate attitude.

A time to be born:

Halbert Swift was born March 6, 1956 in the White Station Community of West point, Mississippi to the late Johnnie Swift and Millie Ann Swift.  He was the seventh child of eight born to this union.

A time to love:

Halbert (Swifty) was married to Charlene Swift.  In this union there was one child (Charnelle Haleesa Swift).  Two brothers preceded him in death, Henry Swift and Johnnie Swift Jr. both of Chicago, Illinois.  He leaves to cherish his memories: His daughter Charnelle (Charlotte, NC), Charlene Swift (Columbia, SC); Three brothers, Reverend Vernon (Josephine) Swift, Tuscaloosa, Alabama;  Lt. Col. Ulysses (Beverly) Swift, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Rochester (Scottie) Swift, Biloxi, Mississippi; Two sisters Rosa Marie (Reverend Steve) Daniels, Saint Paul, Minnesota; Dorothy Jean (James) Johnson, Chicago, Illinois ; a loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

A time to give:

He gave his life to Christ at an early age and united with the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in White Station community of West Point, MS.  Halbert joined Rehoboth Baptist Church and was very active in noon day bible study.  Halbert was dedicated to the task we know as Operation Andrew (Bringing people to Christ). He never missed an opportunity to share his experiences to help others to become a part of our church community. He loved giving praise through songs and testimonies.

A time to serve:

He joined the US Army at an early age where he served 20 years.  He retired SFC with many honors, medals and accommodations.  Later he was employed as a truck driver for Hospital Services and worked at Fort Jackson Gym.  

A time to die:  

Halbert (Swifty) heard the Lord’s call Friday, 24 May at 11:40 p.m.

A time to mourn:

Family members and loving friends will truly miss him.  We take comfort in the fact to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Swift would say “Do not cry for me, do not worry for me.  God had a mission only a soldier could handle…and I was Combat Ready!”
