Mrs. Eartha Lee Hair Carter was born in rural Orangeburg, SC to the late John and Isabella Hair on January 10, 1923; she was their only daughter. She transitioned from her earthly journey on October 12, 2018 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Carter was educated in the public schools of Orangeburg, SC. However, for spiritual enrichment, the family joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. As a young woman, she relocated to Columbia, SC where during her employment with Walgreens, she met and later married the love of her life, Mr. Lawrence Carter, Jr. This union endured for 62 years until Daddy Carter’s demise in 2007. Momma was a faithful member of First Nazareth Baptist Church for many decades until her health declined. Her passion was serving on the Usher Ministry where she did an exemplary job for over 50 years.
“Lee,” as she was affectionately known, was a mother to so many: Along with her brood of 9 children, she lovingly raised nephews, nieces and several of her grandchildren without ever becoming an “empty nester”. She had a renowned gift for cooking and an outstanding green thumb.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by one daughter, Lillie Carter.
Those left to cherish so many fond memories include four sons, Pralue Hair of Bridgeport, CT, Lawrence (Vivian) Carter III, Bishop Malcom (Janet) Carter, Pastor Thomas (Audrey) Carter all of Columbia, SC; four daughters, Cornelia (Kedrick) Terrell of Charlotte, NC, Patricia (Michael) Corbin of Columbia, SC, Ruby Carter of the home, Henrietta (Dennis) Robinson of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Rev. Roosevelt (Viola) Robinson, Sr. of Columbia, SC; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Carter of Columbia, SC and Mable Carter of Ellenwood, GA; thirty-one grands; eighty-seven great grands; twenty-five great-great grands; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
