Dorothy L. Gilmore of Columbia, SC was born August 5, 1968 in the Little Camden Community of Columbia, SC. She was the daughter of the late Maggie Mae Gilmore and the late Freddie Clay Watson. On February 3, 2019 at Palmetto Health Baptist Hospital, Dorothy was called home to be with the Lord.
Dorothy, affectionately called “Phyllis” or “Field” by her family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Richland County. She received her diploma from Dreher High School. Dorothy went on to attend Chris Logan Career College of Cosmetology becoming a licensed cosmetologist in the state of South Carolina. She was employed various places over the years including as an independently contracted custodian for downtown Columbia office buildings, Hairstylist at Waverly Hair School, Accent Elise and P&R contemporary fashion, bridal and salon consultant, cook, banquet and catering, food service, Town House Hotel, Marriott Hotel, Lexington Medical Center, Johnson Food Service, Fort Jackson, and Richland County School District 1. She was known for being an independent hard-working lady that would share her knowledge and input to anyone that listened. She gave a silent helping hand to anyone whom asked her.
Dorothy was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of Lower Richland Boulevard in Hopkins, South Carolina.
Those left to cherish the memories of Dorothy are: her son, James Vandale Gilmore; granddaughter, Bensley Marie Poole; her fiancé, Derrick Greene; sisters, Carlisle (Russell Sumpter) Gilmore, Arlene Anderson, and Sheila (Anthony) Tillman; step sister, Madeline Mattie Green; brother, Lloyd I. (Tony) Gilmore; nieces, Chiquita Sumpter, and Sheltavius Tillman; nephews, Alexander (Regina) Gilmore, Courtney Markee’ Gilmore, and Tony Gilmore; great nephews, Breylin Mays-Gilmore, and Malachi Gallman; great niece, Carmen Serrano; step niece, Latoya Green; step nephew, Christopher M. Green; uncles, Julius (Elizabeth) Gilmore and Jerry Williams; and a host of other loving relatives and friends all of whom will miss her dearly
