Calvin Robinson Obituary

The road was getting rough; the hills were hard to climb, God gently closed Calvin’s weary eyes and whispered, “Peace be Thine.”  On Tuesday, April 2, 2019, God stretched out his hand to Calvin Carnell Robinson and called him home to receive his wings.

Calvin, affectionately known as “Nell” was born on June 20, 1956 to the late Tommie and Lillie Bell Hope Robinson.  He was the tenth child of eleven children and was very spoiled. He was educated in the public schools of Richland County and was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1974.  Upon graduation, Nell went to work for Midlands Trane Heating and Air where he became a skilled technician in heating, ventilation and air conditioning.  Family and friends knew of his expertise and would frequently call on him to help troubleshoot and repair their heating and air problems.  Later on in life he went to work as a Custodian with Lexington/Richland School District Five.

At an early age, Nell accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was baptized.  He loved the Lord and his family.  He was lovable, caring, kind, quiet and was liked by everyone he met. Hanging out and having a good time with family and friends was one of his favorite pastimes.  Throughout Nell’s life his nieces and nephews gravitated to him so much that he considered them as his children.  The nieces were required to call him “Uncle Nell” while the nephews called him “Pipe”.  During his leisure time he could be found at a garage or yard sale looking for a deal as he knew one man’s trash was another man’s treasure.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Charlie Cook, Jr., John E. Robinson and James F. Robinson; one sister, Elizabeth Haltiwanger and the love of his life, Betty Ann Hunter Lyles.

Left to cherish many fond memories are his siblings, Thomas D. Robinson and Pearl (James) Huggins of West Columbia, South Carolina; Laura Ann (George) Pollock of Irmo, South Carolina; Lillie (Larry) Wise of Columbia, South Carolina; Effie (Rev. Woodrow) Lewis of Spartanburg, South Carolina and Elease Garner of Columbia, South Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Robinson of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Frances Robinson of Irmo, South Carolina; one Aunt, Dot Robinson Samuel; three uncles, Claude, Joe and Bobby Robinson and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
