Alphonzo Edmunds was born September 26, 1935, in Lykesland SC. to the late Herbert Edmonds and Ara (Mack) Edmonds. He was the 5th of eight children. He attended Booker T. Washington High school and proceeded to join the US Airforce in 1955 serving and receiving an honorable discharge 1959. He then moved to Montclair, NJ in 1962, where he met Mary L. (Hunt) Edmunds and married until they divorced in 1990. They had four beautiful and wonderful children together.
In 2016 their daughter Marilyn Edmunds preceded him in death. In 1966, Alphonzo relocated his family to their new home in Newark, NJ. He became employed with Pathmark which provided him the means to take care of his family. He happily retired from Pathmark after over 25 years of service. Alphonzo's health was then starting to decline after retiring so he then decided to move back home to Columbia SC. After settling into his new home, he rejoined his church (Union Baptist) under Reverend Henry L. Edmonds Jr. aka one of his cousins (smile). Alphonzo met Ms. Sarah Furgess in 2006, with whom he began to enjoy life with. He loved her and her family dearly and
the love was mutual. His days were not complete unless he had spoken to her. She stayed by his side and cared for him until September 10 when God called him home after battling issues with his health for so long.
He's survived by his (Hats, hats, hats and his lottery tickets. Also, his children son Keith (Diana) of Georgia, son Herbert "Tighe" Edmunds of Georgia, Daughter Angela (Trevor) of Virginia; grandchildren: Terry, Sabrina, Alnisa and Nevia, Greatgrands: Jaylen, Isaiah, Shania, Nehemiah, Landon, Jace aka "lil Al" and Sydney. Thank you, everyone, for just meeting him. For taking the time to converse with him even if it was just small talk. Thank you for teaching him about life even though he didn’t hesitate to try to teach us something as well. Thank you for looking out for him from Pendleton St, to Montclair, to 2nd St. Coming full circle straight to Columbia SC. Family and friends, you gave him memories as well as journeys to ride off into the sunset with.
