Sister Shirley Goodwin Roe was born October 28, 1939 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Mr. Hampton Davis and Mrs. Daisy G. Richardson Kelly. She concluded her earthly journey on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at her home, 317 Weldwood Court.

Shirley received her education in the public schools of Richland County. After high school, Shirley married Edward L. Roe, Sr. They later moved to Arcadia Florida. From their union came Shirley, Edward Jr. and Delvin.

Upon her return to South Carolina, she was employed at Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, where she worked for many years. In a career shift, she worked at the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs as a Food Service Supervisor, where she met her “soulmate,” James Williams.

She was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board for many years. She later moved her membership to New Faith Covenant. Shirley loved her church, her family and her purses. And anyone who knew Shirley knew she really loved her purses!

She was a life member of Modern Free and Accepted Masons of the World, Inc. Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Freemasonry. She was a charter member of East of Eden Chapter No. 650 in Columbia, South Carolina where she held several positions over the years, including Sentinel, Warder and Treasurer. Being an Eastern Star was one of Shirley’s proudest accomplishments.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and soulmate, James Williams; two sisters, Jacqueline Richardson and Johnnie Mae Goodwin.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Shirley Woodard of Columbia, South Carolina; two sons, Edward L. (Alice) Roe, Jr. and Delvin J. Roe, both of Columbia, South Carolina; twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; seven brothers: Hercules (Juanita) and Frank Goodwin, James (Sandra), Stanley (Cathy), Edward, Wilbert (Linda) and Morgan (Sharon) Richardson, all of Columbia, South Carolina; and three sisters: Annie M. Smith-Jackson of Columbia, South Carolina, Sandra (Freddie) Patterson of Jacksonville, Florida and Judy (Bruce) Keith of Columbia, South Carolina. She also leaves one aunt, Ruby Goodwin of Manning, South Carolina; a devoted friend and “sister-in-law,” Edwena Richardson, as well as her loving friends, Rose Marie Wright of Arcadia, Florida and Janie Richardson; a sister-in-law, Patricia Patterson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other loving relatives and friends.
