Mrs. Juanita S. Massie was born October 10, 1929 in Iva, South Carolina to the late Mattie (Will) French Stowers and Emanuel Allen. She departed this earthly life on May 11, 2017 at Providence Northeast Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. She was 87 years old.

She began her education in Anderson County, South Carolina. She later completed her education when she came to Columbia to start training at the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with the Class of 1952. Juanita worked as a Registered Nurse in the areas of environmental control, mental retardation, psychiatry and drug and alcohol abuse treatment, mainly as a supervisor. She retired after 38 years of dedicated service.

Juanita, or “Chief,” as she was called by her late husband, enjoyed many activities and hobbies, including: fishing, gardening, floral arranging, sewing, exercising and traveling. One of her main areas of interest was in senior citizen outreach. For a short time, she wrote a newsletter called The Senior Citizen’s Advocate, which she published from her home with the help of her family. She was also instrumental in creating an exercise routine for the Greenview Park Senior Fitness Club. She enjoyed participating in different activities at the Shepherd’s Center in Eau Claire, especially Midday Bible Study. Never too busy for others, Juanita would visit the sick; check up on others; and listen to their concerns — helping if she could. She will truly be missed by many. Mrs. Massie was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church until her health started to decline.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, MSG (Ret.) Harry L. Massie, and her sisters: Floree, Ethel, Mildred, Winfred, Doris and Helen.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Ms. Janice Radical of Columbia, South Carolina and Mrs. Barbara (Ronnie) Radical Brown of Baldwin Park, California; a granddaughter, Briana Lynette Brown, also of Baldwin Park, California; and loving nieces, nephews and dear friends.
