Mrs. Irene E. (affectionately known as Carmen) White was born December 14, 1934 in Wiesbaden Germany. She departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday April 9, 2018 at her residence 1909 Faraway Drive, Columbia, South Carolina.
Irene was educated in Germany. While there she began to cook, became owner and manager her on Gasthaus (restaurant). The soldiers came to her Gasthaus frequently looking for good home cooked meals. She was known as the only German “Soul Food Cook”. It was here that she met her husband, James R. White. They dated while he was stationed there in the Army. He returned stateside and they were married in Chester, Pennsylvania on May 1, 1970.
Mrs. White began working at Fort Jackson military installation in early 1975 as a Dining Facility Attendant (KP). She continued working in the Dining Facilities until she became Supervisor of over 100 civilian KPs. Her position became part of the Rice Services Food Contract and later she became the receptionist. She worked for two other contractors: 5 Star and American Service Contract. She retired in May 1995.
Irene leaves to cherish her fond memories her devoted and beloved husband, James R. White of Columbia, South Carolina; two god-children Scotty Wittch, Diana Santos, five god-grandchildren; Jarvi Moreno, Angel Crespo, Sophia Crespo, Joscelynalla Santos, and Jessica Ella Davis of Columbia, South Carolina, one brother-in-law, Thomas B. Blake, three sisters-in-law; Mary B. White, Geraldine B. (Robert) Hunter and Thomasine B. Green, all of Camden, New Jersey; and a host of loving nieces, nephew, cousins and dear friends, all of whom join the family in sharing the grief caused by her departure, but rejoice that she is resting with the Lord.
