Dorothy Bell Carter was born March 27, 1937 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Tom and Ruth White, Sr. She peacefully departed this life to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.

“Dot,” as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Richland County. She was a proud graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She was married to the late Earl Carter and spent her life as a homemaker, always believing in family first.

Dorothy was baptized and joined her family church, St. John Baptist Church of Hopkins, South Carolina, at an early age. She was a member of Greater Works Ministry, where she was a mother of the church.  She later joined Cleaves Memorial CME Church in Columbia attending until her health declined.

Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend. She had a heart of gold.  She opened her home not only to her family, but members of the community as well. If you didn’t have a place to stay, her doors were always open; and you were always welcomed with a big smile and a meal. She helped to raise over 200 children in the Hopkins community.

She graced us with her dancing, singing and words of wisdom. If anyone was in need of anything, she would give her last, down to the shirt off her back. She loved fishing, it was a passion of her soul. She was talented and loved to draw beautiful, colorful, pictures full of love and meaning.  She was a virtuous woman, a God-fearing woman.

In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was also predeceased by her brother, Tom White, Jr.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her precious memories:  two daughters, Audrey Jacobs and Jacqueline (William) Anderson; five grandchildren: Noyoca (Forest) Sims, Laranda (Darnell) Jacobs Robinson, Robert Jacobs, Erik Jacobs and Sherman Jacobs; seven great-grandchildren, Iderrious Jacobs, Tamairah Burgess, Shanyah Jacobs, Kerico Jacobs, Micheal Green Jr., Zyaire Sims and Jahmir Jacobs; and one great-great grandchild, Amarriah Jacobs, all of Columbia, South Carolina. She also leaves to mourn her passing a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, all of whom will miss her dearly.
