Brother Alfred “Melvin” Lawton was born to the late Alfred (Bertha) Lawton on February 1, 1945 in Allendale.
He was educated in the public schools of Allendale County, a graduate of Benedict College, Columbia, SC. He was a veteran and served his country in the United States Air Force. Alfred was gainfully employed at Norfolk Railway for 38 years until retirement, being one of the first African American locomotive Engineers in Columbia, SC.
Alfred Lawton was preceded in death by his late wife, Emma Lawton, his brother, Billy Lawton and his grandson, Danzel Roberts.
He leaves to cherish his memories to his children: Carlos (Linda) Mikell, Lolita (Reggie) Roberts, Tonya (Kelvin) Jones, Alfreda Watlington, Alvena Sims, Tyrone Harvey, Shalette Lawton, Alfred Melvin Lawton II, Brooks Gillie, Evita Lawton, Theus Lawton, Candace Hill, India Smith, Altoine Lawton, 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law: William (Charlotte) Mack, one brother-in-law: William Washington, one nephew: Anthony Riley, one niece: Veronica Mack, a special friend of the home: Valerie (Jean) Walton, and many other relatives and friends.
